Lecturers of the department prepared and published through KuAI Press educational and methodological materials for almost all sections of descriptive geometry courses and machine drawing courses. During that period M. I. Kochnev, V. I. Panin, A.S. Moiseyev, B. N. Ostrenko, K. I. Ivashchenko reached great pedagogical skills. Lecturing on descriptive geometry was held with full audience.

At the end of 1960’s and in early 1970’s the leading lecturers of department actively involved in the development and application of the computer-assisted learning and computer-assisted knowledge monitoring of students in descriptive geometry. The machineless method was adopted as a basis. Programs and methodical instructions (developers V. I. Panin, K. I. Ivashchenko, B. N. Ostrenko, E. S. Knyazev) were developed.

In 1967, the department was shifted to the new educational building № 3. Working area was increased more than twice and was equipped with 2 large double-height drawing room, auditorium for descriptive geometry, sample preparation room, lecturers’ room.

In the 1970’s under the presidency of Associate Professor V.I. Panin updating the course of descriptive geometry started. The new course differed from traditional in higher theoretical level of content, more detailed presentation of complex surfaces formation, used for aircraft designing. Lecturers V. I. Panin, A.S. Moiseyev, M. I. Kochnev, K. I. Ivashchenko, V. Ya. Fadeyev participated in updating of this course and in lecturing according to this new program. During the same period, the department took measure to introduction of the Unified System for Design Documentation in educational process.

In 1975 associate professor V. Ya. Fadeyev, experienced with manufacturing work at Kuibyshev Engine Production Association named for M.V. Frunze and also with R&D in the field of machining accuracy, became the head of the Department of Machine Drawing. Also he had great experience in social work: from 1966 to 1969 V.Ya. Fadeev was elected as chairman of the KuAI Staff Trade Union Committee, and from 1969 to 1971 worked as the secretary of the Institute Party Committee.

From 1975 to 1980 the specialized drawing rooms, equipped with methodical and illustrative materials and differentiated for various faculties, were created. Faculty members of the department significantly updated. The collective includes Candidate of Engineering Sciences I. D. Eskin, O. A. Tarabrin, Yu. P. Klenin and currently working L. A. Chempinsky (professor of the Department of Engine Production Technology) and N. N. Kalinina.

Without separation from pedagogical work lecturers V.V. Volkova and V.I. Ivashchenko defended PhD thesis. Updating and improving of the qualitative structure of lecturers allowed to uplevel educational and methodical work. Scientific and methodical sections were formed on faculties; they were headed by the leading lecturers of department: associate professors V. V. Volkova, O. A. Tarabrin, V. Ya. Fadeyev, I. D. Eskin, senior teachers S. A. Kareva, L. G. Uryvskaya.

During the period from 1981 to 1990 members of the department intensively worked on the creation of methodological software support for the course of machine graphics (developers S. A. Kareva, T. V. Kraynova, V. Ya. Fadeyev). After personal computers creation lecturers of the department proceeded to development of methodological support of the new generation: initially, for national PCs, then for IBM PCs (V. I. Ivashchenko, V. V. Volkova, E. V. Gromakovskaya). In educational process computer knowledge monitoring aids became available. Candidates of Engineering Sciences Nikolay Konstantinovich Serenkov, Gennady Alekseevich Repin, and also the senior lecturers Pavel Mikhaylovich Krichever, Yury Nikolaevich Lapshov,Alexander Antonovich Sharapov, Oleg Alekseevich Nadtochy participated in work of the department.

In the 1990’s revolutionary changes of graphic disciplines teaching took place. L. A. Chempinsky conducted a large study of professional graphic systems (CAD editors). National Cherry-ADEM program was selected as the software product for basic graphgeometrical training in SSAU. The group of lecturers, headed by V.Ya. Fadeyev, completed training at engine plant named after M.V. Frunze (later JSC «Motorostroitel», nowadays JSC «Kuznetsov»). During the short period the methodological support, including training manual and methodical instructions of V.Ya. Fadeyev, L.A. Chempinsky, O.A. Tarabrin and I. D. Eskin, was created. Also training in «Engineering computer graphics» discipline was developed for groups of target intensive training at the faculty of Aircraft Engines. A. V. Bykov (one of the main ADEM developers) and V. V. Snigaryov (JSC «Kuznetsov» specialist) significantly assisted the department. O. A. Tarabrin's work of creating electronic library with computer drawings of aircraft engines for the Department of Construction and Design of Aircraft Engines was important.

During the period from 1994 to 2000 the department participated actively in work on development of creative abilities of school students and on preparation for training in technical universities. One of the earlier versions of CAD/CAM ADEM is characterized by simplicity and availability for development of primary school children, small volume of distribution kit, free distribution and simple requirements for computer resources. L.A. Chempinsky proposed the concept of spatial imagination development, based on electronic 3D modeling, and prepared a methodology for training students of secondary schools and lycees (from the 5th to 11th year of study). During that period, a number of lecturers actively participated in teaching of drawing and principles of geometric modeling in secondary schools and lycees of Samara (L.A. Chempinsky, V.I. Ivashchenko, S.S. Komarovskaya, I.V. Muracheva, E.P. Veretelnik, V.V. Platonova). This is the first time when for students of elective course L.A. Chempinsky demonstrated the real parts production by utilizing CNC machine on the basis of the program obtained after processing solid model.

L. A. Chempinsky initiated and facilitated regular competitions, Olympiads and scientific conferences for school students which were held in the regional and city centers of technical creativity, and also on the basis of SSAU. Increasing qualification on the department was noted that SSAU became the site of seminar on computer geometrical modeling for teachers and school students. At the Department of Materials Machining at SSAU a special commission worked, which certified pedagogical employees of institutions of general education and elementary vocational education - handicraft teachers, drawing teachers and vocational instructors. V.Ya. Fadeyev, L.A. Chempinsky and V.I. Ivashchenko were a part of this commission. At that moment the department held a leading position at faculty and at university in general in utilizing 3D modeling in educational process.

At the end of the 1990’s the post-graduate student A.N. Gubanov implemented and successfully passed Ph.D. defense (research supervisor L. A. Chempinsky).

During that period a large scientific and methodical work was carried out for groups of part-time mode form of education. All issues, related to electronic documenting for tasks for basic graphgeometrical training, were considered (L. A. Chempinsky, V. I. Ivashchenko). And at the beginning of the 2000’s, that allowed to gradually prepare the methodological support and to introduce innovative graph-geometrical training for all specialties at the Faculty of Aircraft Engines (L. A. Chempinsky, V. Ya. Fadeyev, V. N. Gavrilov, V. I. Ivashchenko). I was the first time, not only at the university but in the country, when students of mechanical engineering specialties were provided with personal computers during the whole time of classroom studies. The most important point in graph-geometrical training system is to widely use 3D modeling of parts and assembly units, as well as to present the final design documents in electronic form.

Cooperation with institutions of general education and elementary vocational education continued. For instance, V. I. Ivashchenko in cooperation with the staff of the ANO «ORT» Technological Center (Samara) developed methodological support and published training manuals (with workshops and teaching models) for «Computer modeling and computer-aided manufacturing of products» discipline.

For the department, laboratory activity was always important. Fedor Ivanovich Pasko, Alexander Petrovich Lastochkin, Maria Kondratyevna Hozhaylova, Ekaterina Mikhaelovna Sidorova, Leonid Nikolaevich Matsiyevsky and Sergey Ivanovich Shubin, Aleksandr Petrovich Fedorin, Raisa Mikhaelovna Beltyukova made their mark in the history of the department.

The department annually organizes Olympiads on descriptive geometry, engineering computer graphics and 3D modeling at SSAU, and also take part in the Olympiads, which are held in other universities. A team of students under supervision of L.A. Chempinsky became the winner of Olympiads in Nizhny Novgorod. In 2007, a team of SSAU’ students under supervision of N.N. Kalinina won the first place in the All-Russian Olympiad On Descriptive Geometry in Yoshkar-Ola (Mari El Republic).

Nowadays the main directions of the department are the following:
